Henriette Ronner-Knip’s painting “Les Petits Artistes,” translating to “The Little Artist” sets the tone for this selection of romantic and charming pieces. With curious and inquisitive paws, the kitten explores a glass of water- or perhaps mineral spirits- meant for cleaning paint brushes. Knip makes a playful and symbolic connection between the subject and the art itself, in a way not even all artists afford themselves or others in the world of portraiture and self-portraiture ...

The inclusion of cats in a "still life" brings compelling contrast between stasis and movement. We expect our still life’s to be, well, still, however what happens when we bend the rules? When we include an animal who stretches, who chases a ball, or who simply breathes in the quiet of these otherwise stationary scenes? Do we consider this an offense to the composition, or perhaps an innovative boost of personality to it?
